The first 50th birthday gift idea I came up for hubby was a fountain pen. Today I am sharing with you the second birthday gift idea that came to my mind, a watch.

Giving a 50th birthday man who is also a watch collector a watch is very practical, right? It’s a practical present because of its numerous uses as diving equipment, fashion accessory and workout aid.

In fact, I gifted hubby a self-winding watch as his anniversary gift two years ago. In case you also think that a self-winding watch means that you have to wind it yourself, you are not alone. I used to think so.

For your information, self-winding watches don’t wind; they make use of the movement of your body to charge their winding mechanism.

As I knew hubby would wear the watch as often as his other’s watches, I bought him this Orient Men’s Multi-Eyes White Automatic Watch.

The main reason I picked this watch is that it seems too fancy to be casual and too hip to be dressy; the dial is really elegant and the size is smaller like a dress watch, but the bracelet and overall feel suggest a more casual piece.

In brief, I bought a watch that I can also wear.

If you are considering gifting your loved one a watch, here are some tips for making choosing the right watch for him easier.

1. What Will Your Man Be Using the Watch for? A watch that serves in a variety of settings dependent on his lifestyle and intended usage or a specialty watch that is built for the activities in which he takes part?

2. What Are the Characteristics That May Be of His Interest? Will he love a watch that combines both digital and analog faces?

If he travels a lot, a watch that is equipped with an alarm feature and multiple time zones is perfect. A water-resistant watch is fine for occasional water exposure and general use and can be worn in the shower.

3. What Is the Mechanism of the Watch He Is Interested in? Is he more prone to contemporary watches that use a battery-powered quartz crystal to produce very accurate time or mechanical watches that use gears and springs to keep the time or both mechanisms?

4. Take a Close Look at the Watch Casing. Common case materials used for watches include stainless steel, gold, silver, platinum and titanium.

Choose a watch that has a screw-on back and screw-down crown aka the winding knob. The winding knob works to provide the most security from dirt and water.

What about a watch that features a back that lets your husband see the gears and mechanisms that make up the watch?

5. Take Note of the Crystal on the Watch. The crystal on the watch is the clear surface covering the watch face.

For superior clarity, shatter resistance, and scratch resistance, sapphire crystal surface is of course the best option. Acrylic crystal surface is cheaper and may be more easily scuffed than glass, but it still offers reasonable shatter protection.

6. Make Sure the Band Is Comfortable and Secure. Leather bands provide a timeless, rugged look. Nylon bands are strong, secure, and quick drying. Nylon bands are the best choice for sports watches, but you won’t be setting any fashion trends with one. Segmented metal bands are one of the most popular options because they have a clean look and a good feel.
